The Georgetown women’s lacrosse team (0-2) played a tough, evenly-matched game against No. 11 Princeton (3-0), losing 11-7 in its first home game of the season. The Hoyas have had two weeks since their season-opening contest at the University of Delaware. Since that 17-5 loss, the team had only played a half in an exhibition game in against Scotland before the remainder of the game was cancelled due to heavy snow

The Hoyas trailed 7-1 after the first half but rallied to close the game to just four by the final whistle. Princeton had 28 shots and 16 ground balls. Georgetown took just two fewer shots than Princeton and recovered 23 ground balls.

Senior attacker Caroline Tarzian scored the first goal of the game and quickly put Georgetown on the score board, but the Hoyas fell behind after a run of three goals scored by Princeton sophomore Olivia Hompe, two from senior Erin McMunn, one from sophomore Anna Doherty and one from freshman Haley Giraldi.

Tarzian scored twice in the first minute of the second half, and sophomore attacker Colleen Lovett scored two minutes later, making the score 7-4 with Princeton still in the lead. Lovett scored another unassisted goal, and freshman midfielder Hannah Seibel scored for Georgetown with 10:20 left to narrow Princeton’s lead to 10-6.

Tarzian scored her third goal of the game with 6 minutes left but also received a yellow card with 3 minutes remaining. A quick goal from Princeton midfielder Anya Gersoff assisted by senior midfielder Erin Slifer with 36 seconds left ended the game.

Georgetown frequently took advantage of a deep bench to keep fresh legs on the field. Freshmen attacker Amanda Ignatio, midfielder Kathryn Dunn and midfielder Georgia Tunney all saw playing time Saturday. Junior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher played the whole game for Georgetown, saving eight shots and picking up three ground balls.

The Blue and Grey will play George Mason away on Wednesday before returning home to play Towson the following weekend.
